Joyce Owens Obituary

Funeral Services for Ms. Joyce Owens will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Truth in Love Ministries, 1989 Dunn Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32218. The Viewing will be held at the church, Friday, December 8, 2023, from 5-7pm.

Joyce Cassandra Owens was born on May 11, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Otto Maxine Johnson Harris and Grace Elizabeth Harris. She attended the local Duval County Public Schools and graduated apart of the New Stanton Senior High School Class of 1956.

Joyce was united in marriage  to Freddie Owens in 1974 and would remain his faithful and devoted wife, friend and care taker until his passing in 2005.

Joyce received a degree in Floral Industry Management which allowed her to serve as a wedding coordinator and floral designer for many couples over the years. She started her own business, Creations by Owens. Her other passion besides wedding planning was caring for children. Joyce spent years as a daycare manager and eventually began to take children into her own home during their early years. She would teach them to read, they would be potty trained and well groomed.

Aside from all the wedding planning and caretaking of babies Joyce made time to serve others and serve in her local church. The Owens Home was known for throwing a great party. In the 1970s Joyce was a member of Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where she served as President of Usher Board No.2, Director of Easter Programs, a member of the Church Calendar Committee, Assistant Secretary of District No. 9, Pastor Aid and Willing Workers Board.

In 1989 after a revival encounter Joyce moved her membership to Philippian Community Church under the leadership of Pastor Lawrence C. Callahan Sr. and Bishop Virgil C. Jones Sr. There she served as apart of the P.C.C. Banquet Staff and was a Communion Worker.

In 2015, Joyce would join Truth in Love Ministries. She was a devoted member of the 43 Strong, and Seasoned Saints. While her heart desired to serve in her local ministry more, her health would not always allow her.  She dearly loved her leaders, Pastors Cobie & Camilla Nesbitt and their babies. Mama would often tell everyone about her love for them any chance she got.

A devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Joyce was truly a joy to anyone that encountered her. She believed in giving every task your best and thought that perfection came from paying attention to the minor details. She was a nurturer until the end.

Left to mourn the passing of their matriarch is Jackie (Adrian), Darryl Sr. (Michelle), Frederick “Keith”, Darryl Jr., Kamara, Gabrielle, and Ayden. sisters: Jacqueline Maxine Chandler, Gail R. Harris, brother in Law, Eddie “Duckman” Owens; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and lifelong dear friends.
